Quote of the Day: "...Republicans have a better record and a better commitment to national security than the Democrats do"

That was Jerry Falwell's assessment while discussing prospects for the 2008 presidential election.

And just what planet is he living on?

If memory serves me correctly, the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil occurred eight months after George W. Bush took office. And, as the 9/11 Commission Report discusses in painstaking detail, the Bush administration continuously ignored warnings that Osama bin Laden was planning a major attack. Even former Bush administration officials have revealed that Bush and company weren't interested in listening to Clinton administration officials who warned them to be on guard for possible terrorist activity.

Was Bush interested? No. And that's a proven fact.

What have Republicans done to secure our borders, our ports or our chemical plants over the last five years? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Obviously, Jerry Falwell is as clueless as ever. And that's not to mention his other statement that Hillary Clinton would have a tougher time getting votes from Falwell's "flock" than would Lucifer.

Huh?

The Christian fundamentalists just continue to look goofier and goofier every day. At this rate, it won't be long before they make certain Islamic militants look downright civil in comparison.

Thanks for your keen insight into the political scene, Jerry. Next time perhaps you could try speaking in tongues. You might make more sense.

I don't get it. An Episcopal church in Pasadena is being harrassed and investigated by the IRS for stating that war is un-Christian, yet Falwell can constantly talk about voting for Republicans -- and still retain tax-exempt status for his fellowship and church?

How do the neocons get away with this? They constantly mix church and state, and often from the pulpit! Are they being investigated too?

Pretty sad, isn't it, Lydia? Sadder is that so many people buy into all the nonsense these people spew. Is it stupidity? Is it ignorance? Is it just that it's easier to be a jerk than a decent person? All of the above?

Something has to change. These people are sending this country - and its constitution - down the proverbial toilet. Over 200 years of work left in the dust, if they have their way. Disgusting.

Hello? We are talking about Jerry Falwell, right? The same guy who scans cartoons and PBS for allegedly gay characters, right? And Lydia mentions an excellent point; time and again we have seen these folks on the "Religious" right deliver ther doctrine directly from the pulpit to the pew, whether it's this, or those stupid "Justice Sundays", and not once have we seen the IRS in the last six years go after thier 501c non-exempt status. It's total bullshit.

But let's revisit the quote, shall we?

"...Republicans have a better record and a better commitment to national security than the Democrats do"

Right. So that's why we get attacked by 21 people on jet planes, start an offensive against Afghanistan and then do a half-assed job, lie to everyone in sight so that you can start another offensive against a country that hasn't attacked shit since 1990, and do that half-assed. Not to mention, waiting five years after the fact to pass anything about improving port security, putting in a Pavlovian color coded system that tells us when and how to be afraid, fucking with the Geneva conventions, attacking decorated war heroes by painting them with Osama Bin Laden (who they haven't captured yet), and having perhaps the most reactive counterterrorism policy in the world--where we wait until after something happens to actually boost security measures.

That's their "commitment" to national security--constantly fucking it up.
