Fear and shaming in America

I have one question about Osama bin Laden's latest "appearance" on the world's stage, where he contends in an audiotape that al-Qaeda is planning new attacks in America:

Why announce it?

I mean, any terrorist worth his salt would take the Nike approach: Just Do It. That was their M.O. prior to 9/11/01. There were no announcements. There were no overt warnings.

And, by the way, what's the point in offering a "truce" if the U.S. leaves Afghanistan and Iraq? I mean, al-Qaeda didn't seem to have a problem attacking the U.S. before we had any presence whatsoever in Afghanistan or Iraq. So what's changed? Is old Osama getting tired of holing up in a cave somewhere in the middle of nowhere?

Isn't it an interesting coincidence that Osama's latest communication comes amid a myriad of Bush administration troubles and just days before the President's upcoming State of the Union address?

So many questions. So few answers. And so much skepticism.

If he would offer himself to us in exchange for his demands, the plan might actually work! He would get to be a martyr (after years of being persecuted in prison), a hero with his people forever, both sides in the conflict would be tickled, and pretend to stop doing the things they promised to stop doing.

Why announce it?

Don't really know, but maybe it's to head off the inevitable:

Hamas: "We take responsibility for the bombing!"
al Qaeda: "What!? That was our bombing!"
Hamas: "Not it wasn't."
al Qaeda: "Yes it was."
Hamas: We announced it first."
al Qaeda: "No you didn't."
...

Actually, the Al Qaeda M.O. is to announce their attacks in advance.

The African Embassy bombings and 9-11 (and even Madrid) were preceeded with opaque, but later recognisable warnings from Bin Laden.

The warning prior to the African Embassy bombings was given in person by Osama himself to John Miller of ABC. The same John Miller everyone saw last night talking about Bin Laden's message from his current position in the counterterrorism section of the FBI.

No kidding.

The timing of these tapes are always interesting...the tape released just before Election Day...this one, two weeks before the State of the Union Address...

You know what's coming next. Blah, blah, blah--September the 11th, 2001, blah, blah--we will continue to fight and win the blah, blah, war on terror, blah blah, the enemy, blah, blah, Osama is still on the run, blah, blah, so long as I'm yer president...God bless.

This dude is putting out more videos than Michael Jackson has in the last four years, and we still haven't caught him yet? Man...something is rotten in Washington...
